Description

Follow the "Big Train" to the "Golden West" for this lot of (4) rare photos. From Walter Johnson's estate comes this selection of candid images, which though professionally taken are little known. Johnson is seen with silent film era Hollywood stars in this group of 8x10 photos, which can certainly be deemed unusual. While top players are often pictured with celebrities from other venues of fame, this 1920s lot was actually taken in Hollywood where relatively few big name players of the day ventured, as few had reason to travel west of St. Louis unless barnstorming or vacationing. All (4) photos have album residue on the reverse and show general moderate wear to average (GD to VG) in quality. Featured are:

1.) Johnson at center of a group scene with the stars of the 1925 film "Code of the West", with the title written on the top border and the names Ben Hendricks, Eddie Gribbon, Bill Howard (director), W. Johnson, Chas Ogle and Ken Hawks" written on the bottom border, this photo is affected by overall rippling and some surface loss at the corners that does not affect the image area

2.) Johnson holding a baseball and seen with actor Lew Cody and an unknown female, written on the bottom border is "a scenario with Lew Cody", the right edge of this photo is somewhat ragged but this condition does not affect the image area

3.) Johnson again seen with actor Cody in an appealing image in better shape with nice gloss

4.) Johnson and an unnamed male standing on either side of door that has nameplate with the name "Mr. Bell" on it
