Description

John Jacob Astor (d.1848) signed this check dated July 2, 1792 just before his twenty-ninth birthday. Astor was hard at work building a fortune in the fur trade across the Western frontier at that point in his life before embarking on his real estate projects for which he is perhaps better known nowadays. The Bank of the United States check is signed by Astor at the bottom ("7-8" potency) in flowing black steel tipped fountain pen with a signature paraph at the bottom. The check is for one hundred and thirty dollars, representing a sum of approximately $3000 in today's money. Full photo LOA from JSA.
