Feel the passion of tropical baseball with this rare Cuban Baseball League program. Issued for the 1951-1952 season, this pre-communist publication is a fascinating souvenir of a bygone era. Though the text is in Spanish language, the numerous player photos are in English….well at least the names are readily readable. As we enter an age when relations with the island nation are poised to resume, take an interesting time trip back to the days of Desi Arnaz mambos, fine cigars and high-powered baseball, Cuban style.
Rarer than a modern Chevy car on the streets of Havana, this precious program rates as (FR) with top to bottom clear tape repair of the spine and surface paper loss along the right side through most of the pages. Despite these conditions, this rarely encountered publication remains an important relic of a highly competitive league. Listed throughout the fairly crisp pages are multi-page roster sections for the various Cuban professional teams with Habana, Almendares, Mariano and Cienfuegos. These roster sections feature dozens of photos including a good number of MLB stars with HOFers Hoyt Wilhelm, Tommy Lasorda and Billy Herman joined but notables such as Wally Post, Joe Black, Gene Mauch, Adolfo (“Dolf”) Luque, Orestes (“Minnie”) Minoso, along with a wealth of Cuban stars and captivating graphics.
