Just two months before the heart surgery and related stroke that left him in a wheelchair, 63-year-old Joe Louis signed this coupon-book cover page for a lucky fan. At that time, the Brown Bomber was a popular figure on the Vegas strip, salaried with Caesar's Palace to greet patrons, pose for pictures and, in some cases, spread the wealth around with house money. (An image of Louis in his trademark cowboy hat is linked here.) Measuring 5-3/4 x 2-7/8" and dated 8/1/77, the page bears peripheral wear, a vertical fold and two edge tears. Louis' ballpoint signature rates "9" strength. Earlier in the year, on May 14, 1977, Muhammad Ali, Don King, Jimmy Young and Roberto Duran had thrown the legend a birthday party, shortly before a promo event titled "America Honors the Heavyweight Champions," attended by Louis, Ali, Dempsey, Foreman, Frazier, Tunney, Walcott and more. Louis died in 1981. Auction LOA from JSA.
