Description

A popular 1950s practice of featuring back cover Wheaties ads provides exciting crossover value with this lot of (13) vintage Dell comic books. Touting itself with the famous slogan “Breakfast of Champions”, this leading cereal brand made excellent use of an advertising campaign starring a cast of prominent athletes. Shortly after the product’s inception in 1924, this brand made use of athlete endorsements on the packaging, a practice that continues to this day. Standing in the shadow of box collecting, it seems the comic book ads are greatly underappreciated, making this a fine opportunity to build your collection with some relative bargains in acquiring this group. Generally the back covers with the Wheaties ads present better than the front covers which determine the grades assigned below.

Featured are:

George Mikan on Looney Tunes Merrie Melodies issue #136 from 2/53 (FR-GD)

Yogi  Berra on Tom and Jerry Comics #109 from 8/53 (VG) with a name written on the front cover

Roy Campanella on Tarzan #58 from 7/54 (FR-GD)

Roy Campanella on Lone Ranger #71 from 5/54 presents VF details, however the cover appears to be a replacement, which seems to be of a vintage nature but probably not original

Ferris Fain on Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories #10 from 7/53 (PR) due to a significant portion of the front cover being absent, back cover Wheaties ad is complete

George Kell on Looney Tunes Merrie Melodies #144 from 10/53 (GD)

Ralph Kiner on Loony Tunes Merrie Melodies #130 from 8/52 (VG-FN) with a name written on the front cover

Stan Musial on Looney Tunes Merrie Melodies #132 from 10/52 (GD-VG)

Stan Musial on Tom and Jerry Comics #110 from 9/53 (GD)

Phil Rizzuto on Tom and Jerry Comics #107 from 6/53 (FR-GD)

Robin Roberts on Loony Tunes Merrie Melodies #145 from 11/53 (GD)
